This is a special programme (prerogative of the Founder) focused on period health. Having struggled with her own menstruation journey in both curricular and extra curricular fields, this priority area seeks to circumvent those challenges for many.
Menstruation, a natural and vital part of life, can often become a barrier to opportunity, dignity, and well-being, particularly for women and girls in Uganda. Our P.O.W.E.R. (Period Opportunities With Equity and Resources) programme is a dedicated initiative designed to dismantle these barriers and ensure that period health is a foundation for empowerment, not an obstacle.
P.O.W.E.R. takes a comprehensive approach, focusing on:
- Education and Awareness: Providing accurate and destigmatizing information about menstruation, menstrual hygiene, and related health topics to girls, women, boys, men, and communities at large. We aim to break down cultural taboos, challenge misinformation, and foster open and supportive conversations.
- Access to Resources: Ensuring equitable access to affordable and sustainable menstrual hygiene products, including sanitary pads, reusable options, and safe disposal methods. We work to establish reliable supply chains and empower local production where possible.
- WASH Infrastructure and Hygiene Practices: Advocating for and supporting the development of adequate Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities in schools, communities, and public spaces, creating environments where managing menstruation with dignity is possible.
- Empowerment and Advocacy: Building the confidence and capacity of girls and women to understand their bodies, advocate for their menstrual health needs, and challenge discriminatory practices. We foster peer support networks and amplify their voices.
- Reducing Stigma and Promoting Dignity: Working to eliminate the shame and stigma associated with menstruation through community engagement, awareness campaigns, and the promotion of positive social norms. Our goal is to create a society where menstruation is understood and supported.
P.O.W.E.R. is about more than just managing periods; it's about unlocking the full potential of women and girls. By ensuring access to information, resources, and supportive environments, we are creating Period Opportunities With Equity and Resources, enabling them to participate fully in education, work, and community life with dignity and without limitation. We believe that period health is a fundamental right and a crucial element in building a more equitable and empowered Uganda for all.
